Calendar

  • November 12th : Opening Ceremony of the Festival at Théâtre d’Orléans and the Great Hall Pierre-Aimé Touchard,  with evening projection of Alexander Nevsky by Sergei Eisenstein (1939).

  • November 12th-15th : pedagogical events within the framework of the festival (special sessions, educational workshops, meetings and debates with with participation of actors, actresses, directors and critics, as well as contemporary personalities from cultural domains.

  • November 16th-17th : Closing Ceremony of the Festival at the Théâtre d’Orléans, accompanied by the Awards Ceremony events targeting the broad public, among which: the City in celebration with the parade of old cars and costumes.

  • November 17th: last day of screenings of films in competition and documentaries

 

Screenings

  • Screenings of around 40 films among which, the selection of films from the 1939 festival programme but also first time screenings and documentaries. Screenings will take place every day, from November 12th to 17th, at Théâtre d’Orléans and cinema Les Carmes.

 

Prizes 

  • Main Competition Prize awarded by an international jury and renown French cinema critics

  • Local Youth Award - Les Amis Jean Zay, chaired by the historian Pascal Ory, will award Jean Zay Prize 2019 to a high school that produced a short film on the theme “Jean Zay still timely”, inspired by the values ​​to which Jean Zay was committed such as: freedom, equality, fraternity, cultural universality, secularism.

 

Special Activities around the festival 

  • Morning radio broadcast live from the Théâtre d’Orléans (introduction of the films scheduled to be projected that day, focusing on one of them in the form of a “crush” selection by one of the festival guests, debates around the films from the day before, interviews with professionals and cinema personalities; discussions on subjects related to Orléans, etc.).

  • Web Journal of the festival.

  • Make-up, hair and costume workshops led by professionals  photographic studio in the style of famous Harcourt studio; workshop “dances of the 1930s”, etc.

  • Theatrical film presentations

  • Master Classes with Actors and Film Directors.

  • Complementary screenings and pedagogical follow-ups in the classes (Orléans Tours Academy), will be organised during and off the festival period.

 

historical and cinematographic knowledge CONFERENCES

  • International conference “Cannes 1939: dreaming a festival” : Beginning of November 2019: three-day international symposium at the International Center for academic research (Hotel Dupanloup) will be organized by the Committee Jean Zay Cannes 1939.  The symposium is a result of collaboration of the University of Orleans, the ENS, the National Archives, the Cinémathèque Française, the National Film Center. It will bring together researchers, young and experienced, accompanied by cinema historians, historians of the given period, international organizations, professionals in the field of conservation and film heritage... Some of the topics include:  Festival Manufacture; Diplomatic issues and tensions; The How and Why in the film selection; What a selection can teach us; Cannes 1939 and after 1939 / Cannes 1946 / Cannes 1968: cover versions and follow ups; Memory of Jean Zay, occultation and revival in the history of the Cannes festival…
